Conquest Martial Arts - Younger Members Syllabus

The children's curriculum is focused on two essential katas: Sanshin no kata and Kihon Happo. When these two sets of forms are combined, they establish the foundation of your child's training, and their importance extends to adult training as well.

Kihon Happo means "eight basic ways." The first three techniques, known as Koshi Kihon Sanpo (finger striking three ways), are believed to have originated from the Gyokko Ryu. These include: ichimonji no kata, jumonji no kata, and hicho no kata. These three techniques also represent fundamental kamae (stances) that we employ.

The following five techniques are called Torite Goho (arm attacking five ways), which come from either the Kukishinden Ryu or Takagi Yoshin Ryu. As the name implies, these movements typically target an opponent's arms and involve bringing the attacker to the ground.

For the children's training, we utilize safe, padded weapons. While we will provide a few extra club weapons, it is anticipated that your child will bring their own after a few weeks. When selecting a weapon for your child, please view it as a training tool rather than a toy for outdoor play. Encourage your child to handle it with the respect it deserves, as if it were a genuine bladed weapon.

It is up to the head instructor to decide if a child can jump a grade or issue a grade during the non grading sessions.

  • There is a half belt (colour plus white) that is handed out if a child does not quite make the full the grade.

  • The child will be given a chance to grade again roughly 6 months after he assessment.
